Hidden in the hills just outside Luang Prabang, Rosewood Luang Prabang is a boutique luxury retreat with a perfect blend of the jungle, river, and heritage. Location
Rosewood is just 10 minutes from Luang Prabang’s historic centre and about 20 minutes from the airport. Whilst most top-tier hotels are right in the city centre, the Rosewood is further out to the West. This worked well as you have a serene, calm atmosphere in the property and yet you’re just a short rive away from the city centre. This is made even easier by Rosewood’s complimentary shuttle service into the city-centre, in a comfortable air-conditioned Land Cruiser, which we ended up using at least 2-3 times per day.
Arrival & Check-In
As part of our stay benefits, airport pickup and drop-off was included, making our arrival effortless. We took a fairly quick flight from Bangkok and landed in Luang Prabang International Airport. After a lengthy wait at immigration which required a paper copy of the visa upon arrival followed by a second queue to go through Immigration, we were greeted by the Rosewood staff at the baggage claim area. We identified our luggage and the made our way to the hotel car.
Airport Transfer
The journey was quite short but it was great to have WiFi available in the car, cold bottle of water and hand cooked crisps in glass bottles which we devoured. Cold towel service and a friendly driver topped off the great start to our stay.

We arrived at the hotel and were greeted by the staff as we made our way to The Great House, the main building of the hotel which doubles-up as the check-in area, restaurant, breakfast venue and pool… all-in-one, surrounded by lush jungle greenery.
After we were offered a refreshing welcome drink, the staff quickly completed our check-in and explained all the hotel’s facilities to us. The staff also asked us for any stay preferences and we had asked for ice and fresh fruit delivered to our room every morning and they made sure it was there at 7am on the dot, every single morning!

As we completed check-in, the General Manager personally welcomed us. After exchanging dinner and coffee recommendations, we were offered a choice between the Riverside Suite and the Waterfall Pool Villa and they kindly showed us both rooms. After exploring the rooms, we chose the Waterfall Pool Villa for its privacy and seclusion, while the Riverside Suite seemed better suited for families that would appreciate the extra space.
Room – Waterfall Pool Villa
Entrance
Renowned architect Bill Bensley designed each room at Rosewood Luang Prabang, uniquely styling them to blend luxury with local artistry. The Waterfall Pool Villa overlooks the fast-flowing Mekong River and comes with a private pool. It was the perfect blend of serenity and calm—sipping morning coffee on the veranda while listening to the river felt like a little slice of paradise. Our only complaint was that the hotel did not heat the pool, which may make it unusable during the colder season.

Outdoor Space
As we walked down the stairs toward our room, the private pool and sun beds were to our left, while to the right, the veranda welcomed us. It had a full Nespresso coffee setup, a minibar, and elegant wooden furniture. From the warm, natural wood accents to the vibrant pops of colour, every detail felt thoughtfully curated. Just beyond, the Mekong River flowed steadily —perfect for a quiet morning fully immersed in nature.
The staff replenished the mini-bar daily, and I absolutely adored the soft coconut-flavored cookies, almost finishing a jar each day!

Just below the veranda, a wooden swing overlooking the river offered another serene spot to relax, unwind, and soak in the tranquil surroundings. Shame we weren’t at the hotel for additional nights or we’d have loved to spend more time here just lazing around and reading a book.

Bedroom
The bedroom features a classic blue color palette complemented by beautiful interiors and thoughtfully curated décor. While the room is on the darker side, it exudes charm and sophistication with its striking wallpaper, elegant furnishings, and overall aesthetic, creating a cozy and stylish retreat.
If you’ve been to a Bill Bensley property, then you’d immediately recognise the style and the clever use of colours and paintings to create a sense of place.
Upon arrival in our room, we were welcomed by macaroons and some sweet treats.

Bathroom
Walking past the bedroom, through glass double doors, the wardrobe and double vanity come into view, though the wardrobe space was somewhat limited. I absolutely loved the green-coloured wallpaper in the bathroom and the detailing.

We also had a wonderful outdoor bath tub with plenty of natural light. Here too, the designer made clever use of white plain wall to tell a story. This was a perfect setting, although the floor tiles could do with some TLC.
Breakfast
After a restful sleep, we had an early breakfast in The Great House. The hotel was at low occupancy during this period and we were one of two tables occupied during breakfast. Absolutely perfect, as I prefer having a slow breakfast and would rather not socialise until Ive had some caffeine in my body!
Breakfast featured a fully à la carte menu—perfectly suited for a boutique property of this size. The menu offered a mix of local Lao dishes, Asian specialties, and continental favourites, with plenty of vegetarian options.

During our stay, we tried almost everything on offer. Every dish was delicious, especially the local dishes. The staff was also happy to make some items for us off-menu. The flexibility was much appreciated as we’re both vegetarians and the hotel truly catered to our needs. Of course, if you aren’t restricted by dietary restrictions, then there’s even more options to choose from.

Too tired to go into town, we ordered room service one evening. The kitchen offered a limited menu, but they delivered a flavorful curry piping hot and quite promptly. A rather hearty meal and just what we needed after a full day of touring.

Asaya Spa at the Rosewood
In between our visits to the slow-paced town of Luang Prabang, we spent an afternoon at the Rosewood spa to unwind. Tucked deep in the jungle, the spa felt like a secluded sanctuary. At the main reception, the staff welcomed us with a heated neck pillow and a cold towel, immediately setting the tone for relaxation.

The staff escorted us to our couples’ spa room. The beds featured a glass floor panel offering views of the river flowing below—complete with the occasional surprise visitor, like the snakes we spotted half-way through our treatment! The combination of jungle sounds, flowing water, and expert treatments created a deeply calming experience. In fact, it came a close second to the Alila Jabal Akhdar spa in the mountains, one of the most memorable spa experiences we’ve ever had.
The Asaya Spa experience was one of our highlights of the stay. The therapists were wonderful and the entire setting just brought us closer to the natural surroundings. Just perfect!

Outdoor Pool
The oval-shaped pool itself was small and quiet during our stay—likely because guests with private pools preferred to relax by their own villas, while those seeking a bit more sunshine came here. We only had a chance to enjoy it at check-out whilst sipping refreshing coconut water.
There’s a couple of sun loungers and a few cabanas tucked-away from the pool. There’s a few nice spots for relaxing, but I much preferred ur private pool in the villa.

Hotel Activities
Rosewood Luang Prabang offers a variety of paid activities, as well as complimentary all-day transfers to the town, making it easy to explore the area without worrying about logistics. During our stay, we booked two activities through the hotel—and they did not disappoint. In fact these turned out to be the highlights of our stay and something we remember fondly to this day.
Sunset Cruise on the Mekong River
Our first excursion was a sunset cruise on the Mekong River. This included a private boat fully staffed with two members of the Rosewood team and extensive set of snacks and drinks to keep us going. Being vegetarian, we were pleasantly surprised that the staff perfectly catered to our dietary preferences.

Similar to our dining experience at the hotel, the quality of the food and the taste was absolutely 10/10. The noodles served on board were the highlight for us. The crew, who are also part of the hotel staff, were friendly and attentive, making the experience both relaxing and memorable as we watched the sun dip over the river.
Whilst this experience was on the pricier side, compared to the alternatives available, there’s just something about having a boat to yourself and simply enjoying the experience with your loved ones.

Alms Giving
One of the highlights of our trip (It’s difficult to choose!) —and perhaps one of the most memorable experiences in our travels—was participating in the Alms Giving ceremony. Our tour began at 5 a.m., with our guide picking us up. He took us to a local temple where we joined the community in offering rice and fruits to the monks.
Our guide was an ex-monk himself, which meant he was able to share his first-hand experience. He was extremely knowledgeable and answered all our questions, very patiently 🙂
Because we visited a smaller, local temple away from the main tourist streets, the atmosphere was incredibly peaceful and serene, allowing us to truly appreciate the ritual. After the ceremony, the tour continued with a visit to the local market, followed by breakfast at a riverside café, soaking in the quiet beauty of early-morning Luang Prabang before heading back to the hotel.

Turndown Service
Each evening, the turndown service added a thoughtful touch to our stay. A bottle of water was placed by our bedside, accompanied by a small local gift—ranging from traditional sweets to handcrafted home décor items. It was these little details that truly stood out, and the attention to detail did not disappoint, making each night feel warm, personal, and memorable.

Overall Service
Service throughout our stay was exceptional, and I would easily give it a 10/10. We had no complaints—staff anticipated and fulfilled every need, ensuring our stay was completely seamless. The breakfast team quickly got to know our preferences. Some key highlights:
- The GM personally ensured that all guests were well taken care of. He even came by to say hello during breakfast and to enquire about our stay and was there to see us off upon check-out
- We were delivered fresh fruits and ice promptly each morning during our stay, without fail and without having to remind them
- Highly responsive team via WhatsApp, making transfers to and from town effortless. It felt like having our personal chauffeur
- We were greeted with a wam smile each time we arrived at the hotel. The staff was eager to please and did their best to ensure we enjoyed our stay. By the third day, we knew them by name, and it was a sad good bye upon check-out out.
